Body Doubling: The Focus Hack That Uses Other People
2026-10-04 by Gonçalo Alves
What is body doubling?
Body doubling means working on your own tasks while someone else works alongside you — in person, on a video call, or even just in a shared virtual room. You don't collaborate. You simply exist in the same space, each doing your own thing.
And it works. ADHD coaches have used it for years, and anyone who has ever studied in a library or worked in a café knows the feeling: something about quiet company sharpens concentration.
Why it works
- Gentle accountability. It's harder to open Instagram when the person across from you is clearly working. You don't need them to watch — you just feel watched.
- Social presence reduces distraction. The brain treats other focused people as a cue that this is a focused environment.
- Starting becomes easier. Getting going is the hardest part; a body double makes the first move feel less heavy.
- It kills the "invisible work" feeling. Solitary tasks feel less daunting when the room isn't silent and empty.
How to use it
- In person: Grab a coworker or friend and sit at the same table, phones away, timer running for 45–90 minutes.
- Video: Open a call with someone doing their own work. Mute, no chit-chat, just presence. Set a shared end time.
- Shared rooms: Apps like Focusmate match you with strangers for timed co-working sessions.
- In the office: The classic — sit in a common area with your laptop and earbuds in. The hum of others working is the point.
Make it productive, not social
The rules matter:
- Agree the format first: "45 minutes, each on our own tasks, no talking."
- Use the same timer. A Pomodoro session (028) works perfectly: everyone works the same 52 or 25 minutes, then everyone breaks together.
- No task-swapping. Body doubling is for doing, not for chatting about what you'll do.
When it works best
Body doubling shines for tasks that are hard to start and easy to interrupt: admin, writing, reading, coding, studying. If you've been struggling with a task for days, book a body double for it. The company does the starting for you — the Zeigarnik effect does the rest.
